Telnet is a protocol that can be used to test connectivity to a remote server. Using telnet commands, you can prove whether a connection is possible on a specific port.
Please see the example below which tests if you can connect to Basware German Gateway The example is using a Windows environment.
- Open Command Prompt from the Windows Start Menu.

- Type in the telnet command, followed by the destination you are trying to reach, and finally the port you are trying to connect on. Example in the below screenshot.

- Hit Return and check how telnet responds.
If you're getting the error: "'telnet' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.", then you need to enable the Telnet Client Windows feature and try again:
- Click Start > Control Panel.
- Click Programs and Features.
- Click Turn Windows features on or off.
- In the Windows Features dialog box, check the Telnet Client check box.
- Click OK. The system installs the appropriate files. This will take a few seconds to a minute.
The below screenshot shows a successful connection to the Basware German Gateway using port 443.
